Function of SCUTELLARIA BAICALENSIS ROOT EXTRACT:
Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, also known as Baikal skullcap or huang qin, has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. The root is the only part of scutellaria baicalensis that is used.
Skin Care Ingredients
Because it has properties that work as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-allergen, it is often used to treat allergic rhinitis, eczema and psoriasis.
It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of tyrosinase activity to prevent formation of melanin, making Scutellaria effective in skin whitening.
The root of Scutellaria Baicalensis contains the flavonoids baicalin, wogonin, and baicalein. For the skin, the most relevant activities of Baicalin are prevention of damage by UV and control of Atopic Dermatitis. Baicalin also seems to have anticancer and antiviral activity.
Researchers also found that Baicalin and wogonin isolated from Scutellaria baicalensis roots prevented increases in skin thickness and the levels of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) following UVB irradiation.
Other highly preliminary evidence suggests that baicalin, wogonin, and baicalein may have anti-cancer effect, including skin cancer.
Mode of Action
In an article in the “Journal of Ethnopharmacology,” researchers revealed that the skin of rats injected with Scutellaria Baicalensis exhibited significantly less inflammatory reaction than was seen in the control group after both groups were subjected to known allergens. Human cells pretreated with Scutellaria showed a sharply reduced release of histamines when exposed in vitro to known allergens.
