Collagen and Skin Care

After discussing elastin, it is only appropriate that we discuss collagen next. If there is a protein that is more important to your skin than elastin, it is collagen. While elastin provides the skin with the ability to “snap back,” collagen literally holds the skin together. In addition, collagen is largely responsible for the texture and appearance of skin.

What Is Collagen?

Like elastin, collagen is produced in the fibroblasts. Fibroblasts are skin cells in the dermis with specialized functions. In addition to both of these proteins, the fibroblasts also produce GAGs, or glucosaminoglycans. This is the substance that helps keep the skin hydrated.

In order for collagen to be properly produced, there must be ample levels of Vitamin C. If not, the production of collagen can be disrupted (collagen starts as a sub-form, called procollagen). When this process is disrupted, skin disorders can develop. One such example of this would be scurvy. Age and exposure can also result in decreased collagen production.

Protecting Collagen Production in Skin

One of the most common causes of premature reduction in the production of collagen is damage caused by UV exposure. This is a simple solution in that you merely need to protect your skin from overexposure to the sun. Simply put, if you are outdoors, wear sunscreen and/or sunscreen skin care products. In addition, wear protective clothing, such as a wide-brimmed hat on the beach. Also, remember to protect areas of your skin that are often a second thought, such as the back of your neck.

What you put into and on your body can also affect collagen production, both now and in the future. Antioxidants are often associated with health benefits, and for good reason. Look for topical skin care products that are rich in antioxidants as well as eating foods falling into this category. Some examples are:

• Berries

• Spinach

• Garlic

• Green tea

• Nuts
