The term “elastin” is used regularly on skin care sites. Heck, we are guilty of doing that ourselves. Wrongly, we sometimes assume everyone knows what we are talking about. Well, over the next few days, we are going to take the time to educate and explain some of the terms we use so you have a bit more understanding of the information we are providing and the products we offer.
What is Elastin?
Remember that popular toy Stretch Armstrong from the mid 1970s? Well, that toy is a perfect example to explain elastin. Along with collagen, elastin is one of the most important proteins in terms of your skin’s ability to “bounce back.” When Stretch Armstrong was pulled and pulled and pulled, he would always return to his normal shape. Elastin serves much the same purpose for your skin in that when it is stretched or pulled, the elastin allows the skin to retain its original shape.
Now it is time to get out your chemistry book! Elastin, a protein, has a chemical makeup of alanine, glycine, proline, and valine, all amino acids. It is produced in an immature form in the fibroblasts, which are the same connective tissue where collagen is produced. When linked with lysyl oxidase, the reaction caused is the “mature” elastin.
What Does Elastin Have to do with Aging?
As we get older, the fibroblasts mentioned above lose the ability to produce elastin. When this happens, skin loses its ability to “snap back” as it did when younger. The best way to explain this is to actually see it happen. Take the skin on the back of your hand and pinch it together. Now release it and watch how long it takes your skin to go back to its original form. Now do the same on someone older and younger than you are. Notice the difference?
