A dot, a dab or a dollop? When applying skin care products do you know how much is too much? Find out the exact amount of skin care products you really need with each application, so you get bang for your buck and reap healthy rewards from a proper skin care routine.
Everybody, from an 18 year old to a 90 year old wants to look good these days. When it comes to skin care, we have all fallen prey to the old “more is better” adage from time to time. But knowing the proper amount to use is the key to getting the best results.
Not everyone can afford premium skin care products that often cost hundreds of dollars. However those who do decide to spend a few extra bucks on a good quality product should optimize their purchase by using it wisely. Knowing the right amount of serum, moisturizer or cleanser to use is key. In this article we will shed some light on the topic of how much our experts say, is enough for the health of your skin and your pocket as well.
The first step that is common to all products, is to get familiar with the product itself. Most skincare products have usage instructions on the package, or/and dosage and administration guide on the manufacturer website. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions, since they are formulated the product to suit a specific purpose.
For even more advice, here are our expert’s guidelines for applying the right amount of beauty and skin care products with each use.
How To Apply Facial Serum
Serums are lighter in texture and weight than a regular moisturizer, so it is very easy to apply too much.
Facial Serums are concentrated liquid-like products with active ingredients like peptides, enzymes, vitamins and growth factors that are formulated with smaller molecules. Thanks to the size of the molecules they can penetrate deep into the skin, which is why they should be used in smaller amounts than regular moisturizers.
You always want to start with clean skin. Therefore, it is necessary to clean the skin before using the serum. Always exfoliate and use a good cleanser –then try using between 1 and 3 drops on your fingertips and gently patting the serum onto your forehead, chin and cheeks before smoothing over the rest of your face. Next, wait a few minutes until the serum is well absorbed, and then use your moisturizer or any other products you like over it.
RG-Cell® Concentrated Restorative Skin Serum, is so light and spreads so efficiently, you may need even less product with each use. Try using just a drop or 2 a day is just the right amount – it is highly concentrated so avoid using too much, as this may give a negligible effect.
How To Apply Cleanser
Whether you are using an acne cleanser, a cleanser that’s formulated to combat the signs of aging or a cleanser for combination skin, dermatologists recommend using a dime-sized amount of cleanser on a cotton pad or facial brush. It is essential to massage the cleanser over your damp skin for at least 30 seconds, and you may want to extend that time for treatment cleansers. But do not overdo it, you should know that over-washing your face can irritate it and even exacerbate acne. Lastly, rinse with lukewarm water.
How To Apply Moisturizer
When it comes to moisturizer, as a general rule, you’ll want to use a peanut-size amount of moisturizer, or less for oily moisturizers (a few drops will do). This amount will cover your face and neck for the day. After you’ve applied moisturizer, your skin should feel hydrated, not sticky. Note that moisturizers only work if you have just wet your skin with water and then dried off the surface with a towel.
How To Apply Sunscreen
It might be the only beauty product you are not using enough of. Every inch of your skin that is not covered by clothing needs sunscreen. According to Skin Cancer Foundation, you should use 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen all over your body. But you need to reapply every two hours, depending on the time you spend in the sun. For your head and neck, just a teaspoon is recommended, but for just the face it is about 1/3 of teaspoon. Be sure to let the product sit on your skin for the full 30 minutes if you’ll be swimming or sweating.
