Increased Skin Collagen Synthesis by AFA Blue Green Algae Extracts

Background: It has been well established that Vitamin C has been the gold standard for skin collagen synthesis stimulation with an increase up to eight-fold, according to Murad et al., 1981. AFA Blue Green Algae is the most nutrient rich and bio-active of all algae andits great benefits in skin care and inducing collagen properties have been noted. Collagen type I comprises 90% of the body collagen and collagen type III less predominant. The goal of this study was to evaluate the collagen synthesis stimulation of AFA Blue Green Algae extract containing cosmetics {Timeslip RG-Cell Concentrated Restorative Serum} compared with Vitamin C.

Methods: The study was conducted between Oct. 1, 2012 ~ Nov. 14, 2012. In vitro fibroblasts HS27 cell cultures were treated with 1% Vitamin C in the control group and various concentrations AFA algae extract containing cosmetics {TimeslipRg-Cell} 100, 200, 400 ug/mL in the treatment group 1. RT-PCR analysis for Collagen I and III synthesis was performed within 24 hours on all tested samples.

Results: The treatment group showed significant collagen I – image 1 and collagen III – image 2 synthesis at a concentration of 400uc/ml compared with control group containing Vitamin C 1%.

Conclusions: This study proves that AFA algae extract containing cosmetics {Timeslip RG-Cell Concentrated Restorative Serum} significantly increased collagen type I and III expression in fibroblast cultures significantly higher than Vitamin C. Its incorporation in skin care products represents a novel approach in the anti-aging field.
