What Causes Age Spots?

Age spots, liver spots, sun spots…so many names for the same thing. Since they are in no way related to your liver, let’s just toss that one out right away. Sun spots, though, that actually hits the nail right on the head. Age spots are actually caused by exposure to UV rays and sun over long periods of time. They appear in the form of darker “spots” on your skin.

These “spots” are more common that wrinkles and sagging skin. They can begin to show up on individuals in their early 40s, or, if you have spent your days lying in the sun, much earlier. Typically, the patches are darker brown or black in color. Unlike moles, these discolorations are not “raised,” but flat on the skin. You will not be able to feel them as you would a wart or mole, but there is the obvious discoloration.

Should You Be Worried if You Have Age Spots?

Is there any medical danger to an age spot? Technically, no, but this is a significant change to your “normal” skin, so you may want to see your primary doctor and possibly have him or her recommend a dermatologist. Since these spots are caused by excessive sun exposure, the visit could put your mind at ease.

Can Age Spots Be Prevented and/or Treated?

The best way to prevent age spots is to protect your skin against the sun’s rays. You can do this by wearing the proper sunscreen and protective clothing. In fact, many manufactures are now making clothing with UV protection. You can also start to use skin care and makeup products that contain a high SPF.

As far as treating age spots, antioxidants can be used both in your diet and in skin care products. Food items such as green tea and blueberries are very high in antioxidants and help defend against free radicals that cause skin damage. You may also want to consider taking supplements that are rich in antioxidants to help boost your intake.

It may also be time to introduce anti aging skin care products like the RG-Cell® Rejuvenating Nanopeptide Complex into your daily routine. The key ingredients in this particular product are peptides. Dermatologists and skin care experts agree that peptides are essential in “age reversing” products. It also contains antioxidants, which as we explained above, are integral in fighting against free radicals that cause skin damage.
